The first Echo device with Alexa voice services hit the market in 2014—two full years before the Google Home speaker landed. Because of this head start, Alexa supports more smart home devices than Google. Still, most major smart home device makers like Philips Hue and Samsung SmartThings support both. During our research, it was surprising that Alexa's dominance with music services didn't translate into similar performance for video services on smart displays.

However, Siri on the HomePod tends to supersede that feature, responding to any "Hey, Siri" request if it's in range, unless you are actively using your iPhone. And it doesn't have any sort of multiperson features, which sends Siri to the bottom of the standings here. However, Google Assistant does support multiple versions of some of those languages. Siri fared the worst in this department, although Apple employees have said this assistant was not designed to answer trivia questions. In roughly a quarter of the questions I asked, Siri on the HomePod apologized and said it couldn't answer my question. Google’s designers have even spent time crafting Nest Mini’s circular power adapter, which fits neatly in the hand and protrudes from the wall far less than the Echo Dot’s power supply.

All in all, the Nest Mini wins for voice recognition, and the Echo Dot wins for music playback. Frankly, there's very little difference between the two right now.
